The therapeutic intervention focusses on the improvement of emotional, behavioural, and social problems. The child’s inner resources are enabled by the alliance between the therapist and the child, to bring about growth and change. Play therapy is child-centered, play being the primary medium and speech the secondary medium. Some indicators for play therapy include trauma, adjustment to stressful life events, loss or bereavement, depression, anxiety, phobias, social difficulties, attachment difficulties, behavioural difficulties, emotional regulation difficulties, frustration tolerance difficulties, self-esteem problems, and sleeping difficulties.

Much of this natural coping mechanism occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. EMDR utilizes this natural coping mechanism to assist clients in the process of resolving a variety of barriers.
